Mothers, Movies, and Martinis

I can’t believe I got to finally show Year One in a movie theater!!

Our Buffalo premiere of the film was magical, emotional, and powerful. In some ways it felt like a homecoming. To be with a community invested in maternal mental health, and to have the space to connect and share our stories was unforgettable.

The room was full of mothers and daughters, postpartum doulas and experts, and friends and family. I couldn’t be prouder of my co-host Amanda Meyers from Revolution who was giving us Oprah-level moderation energy and my sisters in PPD Dr. Davina Moss and Ashley Rowe who shared gem after gem of wisdom about their own parenting journeys.

After the event, I was blown away by this incredible note I got from Amanda Jowsey, who is a freelance health and wellness writer. Here is what she had to say about the night:

“I had the pleasure of receiving an assignment to attend your movie and I just wanted to reach out and let you know how much it meant to be there.

I immediately started crying during those opening scenes. My tears didn’t stop rolling until a few minutes after the final credits did. I didn’t know how much healing I still needed to do until I watched it. Thank you for being so vulnerable and for sharing this experience in such a unique way.

The room buzzed all night with hope, relief, tears and laughter. Thank you. It’s something I will remember forever.”

Wow! As an artist nothing means more to me than making that soul-level connection through the work. Thank you, Amanda Jowsey, for sharing your story and your kind thoughts with me.

Year One will live on YouTube and is free to watch and to share, but if you’re interested in bringing the film to your community please don’t hesitate to reach out.

The event has inspired me to look at my network and my need to connect more deeply with other parents in Buffalo. I’m thinking of starting some kind of casual get-together so if you live in the Buffalo area and this idea resonates with you please email me back and I’ll keep you posted as it evolves.

Thanks so much to everyone who attended the event. To Revolution and Amanda Meyers for co-hosting, and Seneca One for serving as the backdrop to such an incredible night.

Until next time,

Erin
