Supporting Our AAPI Communities
Between March of last year to February 2021, Stop AAPI Hate has documented over 3,795 incidents of anit-Asian hate in the United States. This number does not include the Atlanta Spa Shooting on March 16th in which 8 people were killed, six of whom were Asian women.
I’m sharing a few resources and organizations support and uplift our Asian American and Pacific Islander community. If you have anything to add to this list please send my way and I’ll share in my next newsletter.
One of my favorite new podcasts is Add to Cart hosted by Kulap Vilaysack and & Suchin Pak. It’s an exploration in consumer culture and what our purchases say about us, in addition to being fun to listen to and full of chemistry (these two women banter like only best friends can). They recently released a new episode Asian Hate & Gaslighting in Georgia that's a must-listen.
I just picked up Minor Feelings by Cathy Park Hong and Know My Name by Chanel Miller. Chanel Miller’s name might sound familiar to you because she was the woman who was sexually assaulted by Brock Turner, and in an incredible act of bravery revealed her name to the media and then shared her story in this New York Times best selling memoir.
In addition to supporting and donating to Stop AAPI Hate, I’ve also donated to Red Canary Song who advocates for the rights of Asian & migrant sex workers, as well as AAPI Women Lead who helps collect data and tell the stories of Asian and Pacific Islander communities, especially around self-identified women and girls. All of these organizations are doing incredible work and I encourage you to donate, if you’re able to do so.
And to my AAPI community, in the words of Nina Turner “we see you, we love you, you belong.”
